In response, he said, "No—how can mythology be history? If mythology were history, it would simply be called history." He acknowledged that stories like those from the Ramayana may have some basis in reality from long ago but noted that over time they have likely undergone modifications as they were passed down through generations. People have added their own exaggerations, resulting in the version of the Ramayana we know today.


He then addressed a similar question regarding whether everything in religious texts is metaphorical. He stated that his opinion on what is metaphorical or literal does not matter much. It depends on the perspective of the person reading those religious texts; some may interpret them metaphorically while others take them literally.

He believes that if any religious text contains ideas that contradict rationality or logic or conflict with contemporary moral values, it should perhaps be ignored or interpreted metaphorically.
